When you're listening to your music collection, it's easy to get annoyed with yourself for stuffing so many terrible songs that you once liked for some inexplicable reason. Apple knows you all too well, and has provided a feature that helps you shed the chaff.

Macworld points out how accessing Last Skipped can improve your musical life. Here are the steps:

*Click on the iTunes header and choose Last Skipped. You'll see a list of skipped songs along with timestamps of the last time you skipped them.

*Right click on the skipped song, then click on Skips to get the number of times you've skipped it.

*You can use the info to create a Smart Playlist and set the condition that songs that have been skipped a certain number of times won't make the cut.

Once upon a time the thought of a firewalled, cordoned, and censored web was enough to send chills up the spine of any internet user. As the years have passed, however, our sentiment has softened. A completely free, decentralized, and unaccountable web might sound ideal, but in actuality it's a very tall order for any large, centralized institution to successfully manage. As a result, the web itself — the backbone — is still free, but schools, offices, ISPs, and even a few countries have started to filter your connection to it.

Now, most surfers aren't even aware that their web access is being filtered, but for tuned-in power users and libertarians the effects of filtering, traffic shaping, and censorship are an assault against their most vital human rights. Fortunately, with a free program called PuTTY, a process called SSH tunneling, and SOCKS proxying, almost anyone can escape their local firewall and enjoy the web in its free and original form. As a rather nice added bonus, SSH tunneling also encrypts all of the data that passes through your local network and ISP, ensuring that no one can snoop on your communications.

Skip ahead to the actual walkthrough

PuTTY and SSH

If you haven't remotely administered a Unix/Linux-like server before, you probably haven't heard of Secure Shell (SSH). Secure Shell is simply a network protocol that allows for encrypted communication between two computers — usually yours, and a remote server. "Shell" refers to the command-line interface (CLI) that is present on almost every kind of computer, including Mac OS X and Windows. SSH is typically used to securely access a remote computer's CLI, but it can also be used to copy files — or it can be used as a tunnel between your computer and another computer on the internet.

PuTTY is an SSH client. You can use it to access a remote CLI, or you can use it to set up a tunnel — and that's what we're going to do now.

Tunneling

When you type a URL or click a link, a request travels from your computer, through the local router and modem, over your ISP's network, across the internet, and into the remote web server. Your request can be filtered at any stage, but generally it's at the local router (the school/corporate firewall) or at the ISP (traffic shaping, federal censorship).

Tunneling bypasses the local router, modem, and your ISP's network, and connects you directly to the internet. If you're in China, for example, SSH tunneling all of your traffic through a computer in America will bypass any national-level filtering and censorship. The actual act of forcing your web traffic through another computer (and another port) is called SOCKS proxying, incidentally — and you can SOCKS proxy without SSH, but it's less secure and more likely to be filtered by your local ISP.

Setting up a tunnel

This guide will focus on using PuTTY, which is only available for Windows. There is a section at the end for Mac and Linux users.

First, download PuTTY (putty.exe). It's a free, standalone program that doesn't require installation — so just make a shortcut on your desktop or taskbar.

Next, you need to find a remote Linux server to use as the end point of your SSH tunnel. You can use a free one (which might involve you jumping through a few hoops to get an account activated), or you can rent a cheap virtual private server (VPS) for around $5/month (which you could also use as a development server or BitTorrent seed box). Either way, you need an SSH account on a remote server, and the IP address and port that you need to connect to.

Now open PuTTY and fill in the Host Name and Port. Make sure SSH is selected from the Connection Type. It should look something like this:

In the left-hand panel, navigate through Connection > SSH > Tunnels (see below). Enter 8080 in the Source Port box and select the Dynamic radio button. Click Add and "D8080″ will appear in the Forwarded Ports list.

Now head back to Session at the top of the left-hand panel, type a name in the Saved Sessions box ("tunnel"), and click Save. Click Open at the bottom of the PuTTY and a new window will pop up asking for your login name; type it in and press Enter. Type your password in and press Enter.

Voila! You now have an open SSH tunnel.

The US government got downgraded by S&P because, unlike corporations, they don't pay the ratings agency any fees, Columbia law professor John Coffee told The Daily Show.

In order to borrow money from the bond market, corporations pay fees to S&P and the other agencies - Moody's and Fitch -- fees that total in the $5 million range. Getting paid by the same people you're supposed to be objectively evaluating is the definition of a conflict of interest, and that vaunted seal turns into a rubber stamp.

To explain how the racket works, Coffee told Stewart that, "It's like a baseball league in which the home team hires the umpire, pays the umpire after each inning, tells the umpire that the fee will be "based on the quality of his performance," and if they don't like his performance, he'll never umpire in their stadium again. That's the functional analogy."

The problem for the US was that they didn't play ball. "When we turn to country or sovereign debt, they are not paid for the rating and now they become strangely enough, independent," said Coffee.

MSNBC's Bob Sullivan also thinks that the downgrade was an act of revenge against Washington for daring to suggest that they facilitated the economic meltdown of 2008 by rating toxic mortgage garbage as AAA.

Along with Moody's and Fitch, S&P "systematically inflated their ratings and probably were the group most responsible for the collapse in 2008," says Coffee in the interview. "The financial collapse couldn't have happened without them."

After all the hysteria of the past week, this 7-minute clip is the most cogent explanation I've heard of what really went down.

Late last month, an Institute of Medicine panel issued recommendations to the White House that birth control, along with a variety of women's health services, should be covered under the Affordable Care Act. Earlier today, the Dept. of Health and Human Services made its final decision on the matter public.

Among those items that will be covered by most insurance plans without patient copay:
* FDA-approved contraception methods and contraceptive counseling;
* well-woman visits;
* screening for gestational diabetes;
* human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing for women 30 years and older;
* sexually-transmitted infection counseling;
* HIV screening and counseling;
* breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling;
* domestic violence screening and counseling.

New health plans will need to include these services without cost sharing for insurance policies with plan years beginning on or after August 1, 2012.

One of the biggest concerns about making these services available without copay is that insurance companies will still need to make up the costs elsewhere. This likely means even higher monthly rates for policyholders.

Defenders of the plan argue that, by making preventative care more affordable and easier to get, insurers and healthcare providers will see a decline in the number of patients seeking costly care later.

Apple has loosed the Lion update unto the world and into the hands of feverish, excited Mac fans. Before you fork over your $30 for an upgrade license, however, be warned that Apple's OS X updates tend to break some applications — and in the case of Lion, which deprecates some older Apple machines, you even need to make sure your hardware is supported before you run the installation.

The version number might have only shifted from 10.6 to 10.7, but in actual fact it's more like the change from Vista to Windows 7 — they look much the same, but there are under-the-hood changes that can cause incompatibilities and instabilities with your current applications. In some cases, application developers only need to release a new version of the installer — but in other cases, installed software will simply refuse to run under OS X Lion until an updated version is released.

Before you install Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, make sure you run through this list of preparatory precautions:

1. Make sure that your installed applications will work after the upgrade

RoaringApps is a community-powered site that has been testing application compatibility for OS X Lion over the last few months using the beta and final, golden master builds. There are a lot of compatible apps, and a large number of apps that haven't yet been tested — but most importantly, there are tons of apps that are incompatible with OS X Lion.

For the most part, if one of your applications is marked as "incompatible" there isn't much you can do except wait for an update from the developer.

2. Make sure your hardware will support OS X Lion

With the update from 10.6 to 10.7, Apple has deprecated any hardware older than 2006 — possibly in an effort to force upgrades, or perhaps just to ensure that OS X remains a smooth, Jobsian experience. If your computer does not feature an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3/i5/i7, or Xeon CPU, it will not run OS X Lion. This includes almost every Intel-powered Mac except for the earliest Mac Minis and MacBook Pros.

If you're uncertain about your Mac's provenance, click the Apple icon in the top left of your screen and then About This Mac. The Processor field will tell you what your computer has under the hood. If it isn't a Core 2 Duo or newer, don't try to install OS X Lion.

3. Run Software Update before you buy and install OS X Lion

It's a simple step, but because OS X Lion is distributed through the Mac App Store, it's important that you run Software Update beforehand to install bug fixes or prerequisite patches. Heck, if you're still using an old version of OS X 10.6, you won't even have the Mac App Store on your computer — so you really will need to run Software Update.

Click the Apple icon in the top left of your screen, Software Update, then follow the prompts.

4. Make a backup

In the unlikely case that something goes wrong during the installation procedure, or if you discover that a vital application doesn't work under the new version of OS X, you'll wish you had a backup. Fortunately, Time Machine makes backing up and restoring your full system incredibly easy — as long as you have an OS X installation DVD, anyway.

Before you install OS X 10.7, run Time Machine and back up your system to an external drive, a NAS, a Time Capsule, or a DIY Time Capsule). The Apple support site has some tips on running Time Machine and how to perform a full restore of your system if something goes wrong.

5. Finally, disable encryption and verify the integrity of your hard drive

As The Next Web points out, OS X Lion introduces a new version of FileVault, and if you're running the old version on OS X 10.6 you should probably disable it before upgrading.

You should also run Disk Utility (type "disk utility" into Spotlight), select Macintosh HD, and click Verify. This will verify the integrity of your hard drive and make sure there are no corrupt files that will get in the way of the upgrade procedure.
